Liev Nikoláievich Tolstói (Yásnaia Polaina, 1828 - Astapovo, 1910) está considerado, junto con Dostoievski, el escritor ruso más importante de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Miembro de una familia de la antigua nobleza, su infancia y adolescencia transcurrieron entre Moscú, la gran hacienda familiar de Yásnaia Poliana y Kazán, en cuya universidad se matriculó en 1844. Participó en la guerrra del Cáucaso y fue oficial de artillería.
Entre sus obras destacan Infancia, adolescencia y juventud, Los cosacos o Resurrección. Con Guerra y paz y Anna Karenina se ganó el respeto de sus contemporáneos y un lugar preeminente en la historia de la literatura universal.
