José Ramón Gavilán es un testigo vivo de la historia del siglo XX, en la que ha ocupado un puesto de excepción. Su biografía política comienza en 1931, asistiendo a la fundación de Falange; y termina en 1983, cuando pasa a la reserva como teniente general, después de haber sido jefe de la Casa Militar de Franco.
Su vida, apasionante, resume la historia de nuestro país en la última centuria. Como falangista, participa en distintas acciones y, en los días previos al levantamiento de 1936, se convierte en enlace del general Mola para la sublevación de la Sexta División Orgánica de Burgos, en la que destacó su padre, Marcelino Gavilán Almuzara, teniente coronel de Caballería. Además, forma parte de un comando secreto para liberar a José Antonio Primo de Rivera de la cárcel de Alicante y facilitarle su huida en un barco alemán.
Durante la guerra, José Ramón Gavilán lucha como alférez de Infantería en la Ciudad Universitaria. Posteriormente, siendo teniente de Aviación, se suma a la Escuadrilla Azul, con la que consigue nueve victorias en el frente ruso durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Finalizada ésta, crea la Escuela de Reactores y se convierte en el primer piloto español que vuela solo en uno de ellos.
Su vida política da un giro cuando es elegido 2º jefe de la Casa Militar y como tal vive en primera línea el asesinato de Carrero Blanco, la elección de Arias Navarro y la agonía y muerte de Francisco Franco.
