Este libro es una introducción a la filosofía y a la historia de la filosofía que puede ser de utilidad para personas que carezcan de formación profesional en este campo y también para los lectores que la posean.
Una de sus principales características es que no ha sido escrito, como es costumbre hacerlo, por un solo autor, sino por una variedad de especialistas. Cuando se trata de una inteligencia de primera categoría, como es el caso, por ejemplo, de las excelentes historias de la filosofìa escritas en el pasado siglo veinte por Bertrand Russell o Karl Jaspers, las ventajas pueden ser, obviamente, mayores que los inconvenientes.
Pero cuando no es ese el caso puede que el lector agradezca más ser iniciado por un especialista en cada uno de los grandes filósofos. El compilador de este libro, Ted Honderich, ha seleccionado los veintitantos ensayos que lo integran extrayéndolos de su ya clásica Enciclopedia Oxford de filosofía (Tecnos, 2008). Sobre Descartes escribe John Cottinghan y sobre Hegel Peter Singer, Sobre Kierkegaard y Nietzsche infornan, respectivamente, Alasdair Hannay y Richard Schacht. T.L.S, Sprigge se ocupa de Spinoza, Schopenhauer y Santayana. Sobre Frege y Russell hablan, respectivamente, Anthony Kenny y Mark Sainsbury. M.I. Inwood analiza el pensamiento de Husserl y Heidegger y Peter Hacker el de Wittgenstein. En atención al público de habla española Manuel Garrido ha incluido el tratamiento de Unamuno y Ortega.
La historia de la filosofía es la Odisea del pensamiento y embarcarse en ella es la más apasionante de las aventuras mentales. Una guía bibliográfica ayuda al lector a ampliar por su cuenta sus conocimientos.
