Aunque ya se conocían algunos fragmentos, fue en 1972 cuando se encontró el texto de esta obra. Su autor, Sun Bin, " el mutilado ", está considerado también como uno de los más importantes estrategas de la antigua China y fue discípulo del mítico sabio taoísta " El maestro del valle del demonio ",reconocido como el más grande teórico del arte de la estrategia.
